Fort Smallwood Park

Fort Smallwood park is in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It sits on a peninsula that overlooks where the Patapsco River meets up with the Chesapeake Bay.

From 1896 to 1928 it served as a United States military fort and the abandoned barracks and gun battery are still there. It has a few walking trails and a playground for the kids. On any given day you will usually see plenty of people fishing.  A new fishing pier was recently built, after the old one was destroyed by Hurricane Isabel in 2003.

Fort Smallwood park is a great place for a photography shoot. The old barrack walls are weathered and painted white, providing a nice neutral background for portraiture. Also, there are plenty of benches facing the water, providing more great backgrounds for portraiture. Beware, though if you are doing a professional photography shoot, you are required to make arrangements ahead of time with the park superintendent.
