Notes from an Art Class in 1998

The following are some short notes I took at a painting class on September 30, 1998. The place was the Maryland College of Art (MICA), and this was a night class that was part of the continuing education program. We would bring our paintings in and group critique them, and the rest of the time we looked at slides of other artists and discussed what we liked/didn’t like about them. Art Every Day

I spend a lot of time online looking at images or art and design. I tell myself it’s for the purpose of inspiration, and it helps to keep me working. But does it though? Sometimes I immerse myself in finding images. Hours go by and I have produced nothing. I’ve merely been hunting, collecting and sorting art, not making it. The next part of the process is that my inner critic starts berating me: “You’re a phony! You call yourself an artist but all you are doing is endlessly scrolling, clicking, posting. You produce nothing!” That guy is such an asshole.

Chuck Close on Courage

I was recently thinking about why it is so hard to cultivate the habit of making art; whether it be words, images, or photography. I came to the conclusion that it should be as simple as cultivating two qualities: courage and discipline.
