This is my latest collect of surface pattern design. I’ve been working on this process and perfecting it for quite awhile. Each year I get a little better at it.

All of these surface pattern designs were created on an iPad. Apps I use to make these: Procreate, Vector Q, Affinity Design. I especially like the Graphic app for its ability to quickly generate a pattern from a tile, and test variations with it.

I find surface pattern design inspiration everywhere – from my own garden, to pictures I take when I’m walking down the street. Also, museums and thrift stores. My latest fun thing to do is to take pictures of vintage plates in thrift stores, digitize them, and incorporate the illustrations into a pattern.

When I compare these surface pattern designs to the ones I posted a year ago, I can really see the progress. It’s still just a fun thing to do and I’ve yet to incorporate them into a product.

I also love posting to my surface pattern design board on pinterest. They tend to get a lot of views and so it helps me to see what is popular, and therefore might eventually make a good product. If you’re interested in purchasing any of these for licensing please fill out my contact page.
