AI Art: When one thing becomes another

I started out with this creative commons image I found. I’m not sure exactly where it was found and what it was used for. The description says, “Dutch Olympic Committee (NOC), 1912-1993, Detail from inventory number 497, Olympic Games 1952 in Oslo,” so I suppose it was part of the Dutch uniform from the 1952 olympic games in Oslo? Whatever it was used for, I think it’s a compelling image – I love the gold thread contrasting with the dark orange. I decided to put it through the wombo app to see what else I could spawn from it. AI Art: In the Style of Georgia O’Keeffe

One of the fun things about making is AI art, is seeing whether an algorithm recognizes an artist. Dall-E 2 (which I am eagerly waiting for an invite) seems to recognizes a great variety of artists. For now I am using the wombo app, and from what I can gather, it only recognizes the very famous and popular ones. So we start with a very popular artist, Georgia O’Keeffe. She has a distinct style and a frequently used subject matter (flowers!), so she is a good starting point to see what the app can do. Some of these pictures were generated from scratch, and some used a seed picture. Read more

Common Print Sizes at 300dpi

Pixel Rendering by Simon Lee

As a digital artist working in the Procreate app, I am always trying to keep in mind common print sizes at 300dpi. I like to use this site because it has a handy pixels-to-inches calculator. You just enter what inches or pixels you are working with, and add the DPI (dots per inch). The more I’ve started using sites like Printful, the more I find it useful to start out with the proper size. So I created this nice table to refer to! I hope you find it helpful. I’ve also indicated which sizes can be used for posters and canvas in Printful.

Poppy Print Tote Bags are Here!

Poppy Print Tote BagLately I have been obsessed with perfecting my poppy print, and I finally have one that would look great on some products. Presenting my poppy print tote bags! It’s been an ongoing process, with different versions of the poppy print. I love poppies. They are such a bold simple flower. This pattern evolved from tracing some photos that I had in procreate. I tried to make it look more painterly at first, but for this one, I’ve settled on a minimalist, Marimekko inspired pattern. Marimekko Unikko is the iconic poppy pattern first introduced in 1964 by the designer, Maija Isola. She actually designed it out of defiance, as the company founder hated floral prints. It went on to define the company and you can find many products with this print. Read more

IPhone Wallpaper art marketing experiment.

A surface pattern design I’ve been working on.

As far as art marketing goes, I’ve been leaning heavily towards Pinterest these days. Instagram is okay, but it feels like such a treadmill – liking and hashtagging all day long, just to get some engagement and attention from users who are also just trying to get my engagement and attention. Pinterest is different. I feel like people go on there looking for inspiration, and things to purchase. Also, my business page reports that I have over 5000 monthly impressions on my pins! I’m sure these numbers are skewed somehow to make it look good and make me want to use Pinterest for my art marketing. But even if they are exaggerated a bit, it’s still way more engagement than I get on either instagram, or this website. Read more
